Record patterns from the ground
Photograph peeling, staining, open joints, damaged boards, and window or door surrounds from safe locations. Note which elevations are affected and whether a symptom returns after rain. Avoid climbing onto roofs or ladders to collect inspection photos. Ask what assessment is required before a coating-only scope is proposed.
Define the repair boundary
Separate siding replacement, trim repairs, sealant work, and painting into clear items. Identify what can be assessed before preparation and what may only be visible later. Agree how hidden deterioration will be photographed and approved. A paint quote should not silently assume that every underlying surface is sound.
Compare preparation and coating systems
Ask which cleaning and preparation methods are proposed for each material and coating history. Discuss product compatibility, surface condition, and manufacturer application instructions. Include protection of windows, plants, neighboring surfaces, and access routes. The number of colors alone does not define the labor needed for a durable finish.
Plan around conditions and access
Discuss staging, elevation access, forecast interruptions, and what happens if surfaces are not ready for application. Confirm city or county review questions where repairs affect the building. Ask for a scope and scheduling process rather than a guaranteed dry-weather date. Finish with a documented walkaround and retained product information.
